The chief executive of Hermes was seated next to style icon Jane Birkin on a plane in the 1980s when Jane complained of never having a weekend bag that was sizey and practical – so he designed her the perfect bag for her and named it in her honour. But the perfect bag doesn’t come easily, with Hermes producing only a limited edition each year and waiting lists stretching into years - for those who can obtain one at all.
